The Food Safety Refresher Course is an SFA-accredited programme designed to provide food handlers with a comprehensive review of essential food safety and hygiene practices. Taught by AESTHETICAR, an SSG-approved vendor, the course ensures participants are trained on the latest Food Safety curriculum in line with the Singapore Food Agency’s guidelines. Upon completion, participants will have the competency to work in various SFA-licensed food establishments, such as kitchens, hawker centres, and other F&B outlets.
Who Should Attend
This refresher course is specifically designed for individuals who have previously passed the WSQ Food Safety Course Level 1 (formerly Basic Food Hygiene Course) and are required to renew their certification.
It is mandatory for all food handlers, whether working in retail or non-retail food businesses licensed by SFA, to attend this refresher training. This includes roles such as:
- Chefs, Sous Chefs, and Cooks
- Kitchen Assistants and Food Stall Assistants
- Bartenders and Mixologists
- Workers in food manufacturing and food processing plants
Pre-requisites
Candidates must be in proper dress code and adhere to the following when attending the class:
- Wear covered shoes
- Have clean, short, trimmed nails
- Keep long hair tied back and in a tidy condition
The admission requirements are:
- At least 16 years old
- Able to speak, listen, write, and read basic English or Mandarin
- No prior work experience required
Duration
The Food Hygiene Refresher Course is a one-day course, covering 4.5 hours (including assessment).
Course Objectives
The primary objective of this intensive training is to refresh the foundational knowledge and practical skills of certified food handlers. The training utilises the latest Food Safety curriculum, ensuring participants meet the Singapore Food Agency’s current regulatory standards and maintain competency for their role.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Practice personal hygiene to minimise food safety risks.
- Use safe ingredients in food preparation.
- Handle food safely throughout the preparation and serving process.
- Store food safely to prevent contamination and spoilage.
- Maintain cleanliness of utensils, equipment, and service/storage areas.\
Course Outline
The Food Hygiene Refresher Course content is delivered across five key modules to ensure comprehensive knowledge update and skill reinforcement:
- Module 1: Practise Good Personal Hygiene
- Module 2: Use Safe Ingredients
- Module 3: Handling Food Safely
- Module 4: Store Food Safely
- Module 5: Maintain Cleanliness of Utensils, Equipment, and Service/Storage Areas
Mode of Assessment
At the end of this course, participants will be required to undergo a compulsory 1-hour assessment to demonstrate competency in the core modules. The assessment consists of three components:
- Written Examination
- Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)
- Short Answer Questions (SAQ).

- Oral Questions
Certification & Validity
Participants who fulfil at least 75% minimum attendance and pass all assessments (attain 100% competency) will receive a Statement of Attainment (SOA) for the Food Safety Refresher Course (Level 1), issued by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG). This SOA confirms your renewed competency as a certified food handler.
The validity of the food hygiene certificate in Singapore is 5 years. To prevent the expiry of it, you must attend your first refresher training by the 5th year from the date the initial course was passed. Subsequent refresher trainings are then required every 10 years thereafter.
